Middle School
Secondary school starts in grade 6 in the French education system, whereas it only starts in grade 8 in the BC education system. EFIV ‘s Middle School – called Collège in France – therefore starts in grade 6 and offers the same experience as any French Collège would offer: same curriculum, one teacher per subject, 3rd language, etc.
The CNED is a public institution of the French Ministry of National Education offering distance learning and evaluation services for French schools abroad. Our Middle School students are evaluated by this centre in French, math, history and geography. Their level in these subjects is therefore officially validated which gives them the ability to join any other French school around the world. For more information about the CNED, you may visit their website by clicking here.
The objective of our program is for our students to develop their skills in both French and English. 75% of class hours are taught in French and 25% in English. Language Arts, Math, Social Studies are taught in both languages. Science and Music, Art and Physical Education are taught in French. In keeping with our goal of maintaining a balanced program, all opportunities for reinforcing a theme across curriculum areas are utilized.
Language Arts
Novels, poetry, short stories, and literature-based materials are used to teach Language Arts in both languages. A systematic approach is used to ensure that all grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and conjugation concepts are introduced and reviewed. Creative writing is a widely used tool for reinforcing and refining these skills. French is validated by the CNED.
Math
Mathematics concepts are taught primarily in French and are reinforced in English. Measurement, time and money are taught in both languages. Math includes the study of geometry, numeration (decimals, fractions, negative numbers, equations) and applications of mathematical data (percentages and statistics). Validated by the CNED.
French Social Studies
In History, major themes include the study of ancient civilizations (politics, geography and culture), the Middle Ages, the Classical Age and the study of France from the XVIIth century to 1914. In Geography, the students will study the concepts of population, climates and topography of the world, with specific examples in Africa, Asia and America and the geography of Europe and France.
Validated by the CNED.
English Social Studies
Our major themes include ancient civilizations and forms of government. The program is presented through the novels studied in Literature.
Language Support
A support program in English is offered for our students who enrol in the Middle School without prior knowledge of English.
Social Development
Activities fostering social development are emphasized in the Middle School. Our students meet twice a week and participate in discussions and collective projects, focused on issues that are specific to teenagers. This allows our students to learn how to position themselves within their peer group, interact with adults and relate to the outside world.
Trip to Paris
In their final year at EFIV, the grade 7 students take a week-long study trip to Paris to discover the cultural and historical aspects of the capital of France.
